Bangalore-specific notes

In Bangalore, name change affidavits must be executed on Karnataka non-judicial stamp paper (₹20 is standard for a name change declaration) and notarised by a licensed notary. Karnataka e-stamp papers through SHCIL are accepted and often easier to procure than traditional stamp paper. The Karnataka State Gazette office is in Bangalore, which keeps the gazette leg of the workflow fast compared to other states. Times of India and Vijaya Karnataka both have legal-notice desks in Bangalore and accept ad copy over email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a gazette notification really required for a legal name change?

For many purposes — Aadhaar update, passport, bank KYC — a notarised affidavit plus newspaper publication is sufficient. For stronger proof (especially PSU/central government employment, educational records), the Karnataka State Gazette notification is recommended. Sevantay supports both routes and advises based on your end use.

Do I have to travel to a newspaper office?

No. Sevantay handles the entire newspaper publication remotely — you only approve the ad copy over WhatsApp. We share the publication date and scanned clippings once the notice appears.

Can I do this if I live outside Bangalore?

Yes, as long as one of the documents (voter ID, ration card, utility bill) links you to Karnataka. The newspaper publication must happen in the state where you are legally resident.

What if my affidavit has a typo after notarisation?

Typos on a notarised affidavit cannot be corrected — a fresh affidavit must be drafted. Sevantay does a two-step review (you approve the draft, then you approve the printed copy) specifically to prevent this.

How soon can I start using my new name on Aadhaar?

Once the affidavit is notarised and at least one newspaper publication has appeared, you can begin the Aadhaar update. Full gazette proof is not required for Aadhaar in most cases — but is required for passport and some PSU jobs.

Do you publish in other Kannada newspapers besides Vijaya Karnataka?

Yes — Prajavani, Udayavani or Kannada Prabha on request. Vijaya Karnataka is the default because it is the most widely accepted Kannada daily for legal notices.
